A Day with Dignitaries: Celebrating Environmental Sustainability

A Day with Dignitaries: Celebrating Environmental Sustainability

Tuesday, November 14, 2023 – A day etched in my memory, marking a significant stride in our journey towards a greener future. I, JJ Stranan, through our collaboration with Plastic Oceans Australasia, had the distinct honour of being invited by Ricki Hersburgh to a special event. It wasn't just any gathering but an occasion graced by the Governor General of Australia, David Hurley, and his wife, Linda Hurley. The purpose? To acknowledge the pivotal contributions made in the recycling sector and to launch the impactful 'Picnics Unwrapped' campaign by Plastic Oceans Australasia.

Intimate Encounters and Inspirational Speeches

The event unfolded in an enchanting manner, starting with an intimate group interaction with the Governor General and his wife. Their warmth and approachability made the conversation both enlightening and personal. Following this, we transitioned to the formal part of the event, marked by speeches that not only inspired but also echoed our collective commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Charm of a Shared Picnic

In the true spirit of community and unity, the event featured a shared picnic, albeit indoors due to the Canberra weather that gave us its own challenge to deal with! This wasn't just a meal; it was a symbol of togetherness and shared responsibility towards our planet. The relaxed atmosphere allowed for meaningful exchanges and reflections on our roles in protecting and nurturing our environment.

"You, Me & the Sea" – A Symbol of Hope

A highlight of the day was witnessing the engagement of the young minds from Canberra State High. These impressive students took the opportunity to relax on our charity mat, aptly named "You, Me & the Sea." This mat, a product of us here at Recycled Mats, isn't just a comfort underfoot but a beacon of hope, with 10% of its sales donated to Plastic Oceans Australasia. This initiative supports their incredible community work, reinforcing the message that every small contribution counts towards a larger impact. Check out this stunning mat "You, Me and the Sea" recycled mat here and contribute to the great work that Ricki and her team does.

Reflections and Looking Forward

As I reflect on the day's events, I am filled with a sense of pride and optimism. Being part of an event that not only recognizes efforts in recycling but also actively promotes environmental awareness is truly humbling. The 'Picnics Unwrapped' campaign is more than just an initiative; it's a call to action for each one of us to play our part in preserving the beauty and integrity of our planet.

As we continue our journey, the memories of this day will serve as a reminder of the power of collaboration, the importance of community involvement, and the ever-present need for environmental advocacy. Let us all be inspired by these moments to create a sustainable and thriving world for future generations.
